MUST READ!!: My Learning Curve Tips - Here are the "workarounds" for the pitfalls that may come up!
1. If using with students in a computer lab, follow these tips for success:
A. Save as Movie option creates the actual movie while Save as Project save the project. Make sure you teach this explicitly - it's not a movie until it is saved as a movie.
B. Save to "My Videos" which is in "My Documents" on the C: drive of the computer being used - then transfer it to a shared folder, dropbox, or a USB drive. That way you don't cause the whole computer lab performance to tank!
C. Reserve time to Save as Movie - the longer the project - the more time you will need. A four-five minute video takes about 5-6 minutes to save. (but have extra time just in case something goes wrong)
D.Have students collect images, music, and videos into a folder on a shared folder first - NOT on the C: drive - because they cannot get to it if they need to use a different computer. Once your folder of stuff is ready, then start the import process in the MovieMaker.
E. There are different versions of MovieMaker floating around depending on the age of the computer and version of windows being used. You can download the newest version from Microsoft but an easier solution is have them Save as a Movie if they know they will be using another computer and then they can import it into the newer/older version and continue working.
F. Have the students save their project right after they get working on it - it will then continually "autosave" so if the computer should lock up, all is not lost! Simply restart, reboot etc. and it will all be there!
G. File sizes can be large so if you are using a USB - you will need a very large one or a bunch - a 4-5 minute movie is about 15MB - Use http:\\www.dropbox.com (you get a free 3.2 GB) this way.
File Format Conversion Resources:
Sometimes you need to use something that is no directly compatible with WMM - here are some resources to help you:
http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/index.html- Downloadable software that easily converts a bunch of different formats. WMM needs AVI, WMV, or MPEG - most digital cameras now use MPEG format but if you had a Quicktime or other type of video - this is invaluable.
Middle & High School Youtube - Instrumental RAP beats or other music http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ (capture the sound/music of any youtube video - paste the url of the youtube video)
Images, Speeches etc You need an account for this: http://www.discoveryeducation.com
This is the "Youtube" of digital photography - there is everything here. If it copyrighted you won't be able to use it but much of it is open to saving.
